Fabelhaft Registered Maine Coons

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions & Answers

01What tests do you perform?

All breeding pairs are tested genetically and certified clear of congenital conditions through Optimal Selection. We also have adults with blue eyes BAER tested, to minimize the risk of congenital hearing issues related to the Dominant Blue Eyed (DBE) gene. All kittens with the DBE gene will show white (bi-colour) prominently, in accordance with the breed standard.

While we can’t guarantee all DBE kittens will have full hearing (up to 85% do not), they are meant to be indoor companions, unless specifically supervised on leash or in an outdoor catio. Cats compensate with many other heightened sensibilities, so the effect is not as pronounced as it would be with canines.

Our Main(e) man, Storm, is fully tested and clear for hearing, and we are happy to provide you with a copy of his results.

02Do you offer a health guarantee?

Yes, we offer a guarantee, provided you have your kitten seen by a veterinarian of your choice within 4 days of transfer (proof of condition or finding required).

If your kitten develops a congenital issue (verified by necropsy) within 2 years, Fabelhaft will replace your kitten or fully refund your purchase price.

03Is it better to adopt a male or a female?

When well socialized and spayed or neutered, both sexes make excellent pets. A male is generally larger, but there are exceptions! Some of our girls reach 22 lbs, and some boys only achieve 15 lbs.

All pets should be spayed or neutered before 2 years of age (earlier, if you have other pets in the house) to ensure behaviour, hygiene, and disposition is aligned with the usual environment of a household pet. That said, this is a slow growing breed, so it’s important to wait until they achieve 6 months minimum before scheduling surgery.

04Can I get references?

Absolutely! We need a little notice to request this personalized information from past families, but once we start to think about committing, we know this is an important part of the process on your end.

If you have applied and would like to hear from Fabelhaft owners, please contact me with the email subject: reference request.

05When can my chosen baby come home?

A week after their second vaccination, at approximately 12 weeks, we can arrange pick up or pet courier transfer, depending on destination and international pet travel requirements. Please note that all costs related to this transfer are the responsibility of the new owner(s).

06How do I arrange transfer to my home, in or outside of Canada?

We are available to consult on the process, either directly or via pet courier. We have shipped kittens internationally at age-appropriate times, but prefer personal pick up or a pet nanny in order to honour the health guarantee and ensure the smoothest possible transition for your new baby.

Canada has some extreme temperature restrictions for shipping cargo, and unless the season and route is acceptable, we will work with you to provide a safe travel option. Any international shipping will be arranged through a reliable pet nanny.
